Mallard

It can be found in all areas of Hungary, where their is water. It mainly prefers rivers and lakes. Due to these cicrcumstances many people all over the country, mainly around fish ponds breed mallards. The male is called the drake and the female called the layer.
When during the flights the sky becomes black for nearly an hour, you can imagine how quickly the hunter's heart is beating. Among the ducks the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), the garganey (Anas querquedula), the common teal (Anas crecca), the pochard (Aythya ferina) and garrot (Bucephala clangula); among the grey goose the bean goose (Anser fabalis) and the white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons albifrons) can be taken. Other species are protected.

The wild duck can be taken in August during the flights, and later by search hunts. Successful and exciting hunting method is the hunting on stubble fields. The wild duck can be found anywhere, their favourite habitats are meadows next to the rivers, reedy lakes and puddles. For the grey goose hunting bad weather, fog or strong wind is needed, so that the goose fly low enough, otherwise the hunter has no chance to take them down by shot cartridges.

Best areas: Lake Fertő, Biharugra, Hortobágy, certain parts of the Danube, Lake Balaton and Lake Tata.
